故事主要说的是十八世纪在英国发生的四门婚姻。其中最主要的，自然是发生在女主角伊丽莎白·班纳特与男主角费茨威廉·达西之间的爱恨情仇。伊丽莎白是个勇于追求爱情、漂亮聪明、坚强可爱的中产阶级女子。故事主要以她对达西先生从一开始的厌恶到尊敬，再到爱慕为线索，也穿插了在几个发生在她身边的幸福或不幸的婚姻，揭示了作者对那个时代女人生活与爱情的理想和期望。
